Since I do occasionally find myself with the odd blemish (don’t tell anyone, everyone seems to think my skin is absolutely perfect and I get a surprising amount of compliments on it) I am always on the lookout for a decent concealer or cover stick. I have a few I’ve bought and only used once or twice, too, as it’s only with regular use that you can really figure out how a concealer plays with your foundation and powder, and how well it lasts through an entire day of wear.
So when I saw this cheapie Essence concealer it had to come home with me for some good old-fashioned testing. 😀
Shade number 01 in Matt Sand is the lightest one, which is a tad too dark for my skin tone but once blended and under foundation is really doesn’t matter, you can’t see the difference at all. The formula also contains allantoin which has a calming effect, so not only does this little product cover your blemishes up, it also helps to treat them. The consistency of this product is nice and thick, which means it covers blemishes effectively and it it less likely to blend away completely under your foundation or just under the bustle of the day, and it comes in a handy little twist up applicator. I find it easiest to apply it with the applicator where I need it, and use my fingertips to heat the product and blend the edges into my skin. A concealer brush is nifty but don’t fret if you don’t have one; fingers are very good for this sort of thing (especially now as the temperature drops and products change consistency slightly as a result).
As you can see, it is pretty effective! I am very happy with it and will probably repurchase it, unless I find something better. Essence is a fabulously-priced brand (this particular product was definitely less than R50) and it is cruelty-free so you can splurge with a clear conscience. 😉

It should come as no surprise to my regular readers that I have very oily skin, and since I’ve gone off of the pill I’ve been absolutely terrified of my acne returning (acne being the reason I was on the pill in the first place). So when I spotted these Garnier Pure Active products at Clicks, I was pretty excited.
I am currently using three products from this range: the Daily Energising Gel Scrub in the mornings, the Anti-Spot Exfoliating Scrub in the evenings, and the Daily Pore-Reducing Toner after I cleanse.
I thought since between the three of them they make up the most intensive skin care routine I’ve ever had, I’d review all three in one blog post. So, here goes. 😀
Daily Energising Gel Scrub
This lovely orange scrub has a bunch of delicious fruity extracts in it, like grapefruit and pomegranate. It also has little exfoliating beads which make it look pretty, aren’t harsh on the skin, and, I cannot state this enough, SHOULD NOT accidentally find their way into either of your eyes if you are silly enough to wash your face with your eyes open and don’t concentrate. It took me 45 minutes to get (what looked like but did not feel like) a tiny little exfoliating bead out from under my left eyelid. It hurt. Don’t do that.
In other news, this scrub contains salicylic acid which is a nifty little acid that is great for people with oily, acne prone skin because it gets deep into your pores to clean out gunk, and encourages your pores to tighten up afterwards as well. In other words, the holy grail.
I have definitely noticed an improvement in my skin since using this scrub every morning, and who wouldn’t want to wake up to this gorgeous aroma? It’s like slathering fresh fruit all over my face and always kicks my day off in a pleasant way.
Anti-Spot Exfoliating Scrub
This is my night-time face wash (my gosh, look at how fancy I am – two different face washes!) and I like to think of it as the big guns. It’s not light and fruity and pleasant, but a rather clinical blue and white. It also contains little exfoliating beads as well as 2% salicylic acid (which I believe is at the higher end of the spectrum), and doesn’t have a particularly remarkable smell.
The beads aren’t particularly harsh on my skin (which can take a beating) but I would be wary of applying them to sensitive skin. This scrub also contains something called Herbisoothe which is a fancy way of saying that it makes your skin feel lovely and cool when you rinse it off – something I definitely appreciate when enduring a harsh South African summer.
All-in-all this product is pretty badass – I’ve seen a big improvement in my skin with this as well.
Daily Pore-Reducing Toner
This product also contains that little beauty, salicylic acid. I really wanted to like it, but unfortunately one whiff of this takes my breath away – it has an incredibly strong and unpleasant smell. It stings on my skin, and it makes my oil production increase exponentially.
I reckon that this is a product best used by itself, without any other salicylic acid-containing products, otherwise I get the feeling that your skin will act up. The proposed benefits sound pretty great but it’t just not worth the excess oil. I may try diluting it and see how that works, since it was a little more pricey than my boring old Clicks-brand toner and I don’t want to waste it.
So, there you have it – overall I’m very please with Garnier’s range and I have a few more products I’ve definitely got my eye on. Their products are definitely not overpriced – my remembered estimate is between R70 and R100 for products like these, so they are affordable even for a poor student like me. 😉

Thanks, Rubies – this month’s box really was a lovely surprise!
Emanual Ungaro Diva Rose Perfume Sample
Yippee for a new perfume sample – I haven’t tried it yet, but I love that Rubybox keeps me stocked up on perfume samples to enjoy while hanging around at home or after a nice long bath. Listen to how decadent this sounds: “intoxicating bouquet of Bulgarian rose combines with fresh, fruity bergamot, litchi, and crushed green leaves.” Yum!
Peppertree Blueberry Hand and Body Lotion
This is a massive 300ml full-sized product, and made my Ruybox feel delightfully heavy and promising when the delivery driver handed it to me. 😀 It’s lightly scented but smells absolutely delicious and totally edible. While it’s touted as being for both hands and body, it’s a bit too thin for my own hand cream preferences so I think this will make a great after-bath body lotion in these summer months – is there anything better than having an excuse to smell like mouth-watering fruit? I think not. 😛
Rimmel 60 Seconds Nail Polish in Blue My Mind
I adore this colour in the bottle! The photograph makes it look purely blue but in the bottle it’s a blue-purple shade that is just too beautiful. I love getting nail polishes to try out and the fact that this is quick-drying and nice and bright makes it ideal for me.
Yardley Colour Rush Lipstick in Creamy Blush
The perfect colour for my complexion, this lipstick is absolutely “like my lips, but better”. It can give lovely intense colour or be blended a little bit for softer colour, is creamy soft, and has the tiniest bit of shimmer in it to make it even better. I love the velvety packaging as well. All in all, what a treat!
I feel thoroughly spoiled, thanks, Rubies!

It’s that time of month again, guys! My Rubybox arrived quickly and with no mess or fuss, this morning – what a pleasure! So without further ado, here’s what the Rubies spoiled me with this month:
Bramley Magnolia Body Butter Sample
This is such a cute little sample, perfect for keeping in my handbag or next to my bed for those terribly-dry winter hands that we always seem to get! It smells gorgeous and has a lovely, rich consistency that will be an absolute life-saver.
Nutriwomen Oxygenating Papaya Masque sample
Apparently this masque uses natural papaya enzymes to remove dead skin cell build-up – another wonderful thing for winter, and a product that I’ve never tried before, so I’m very excited to give this one a go!
Rubybox Tools Concealer Brush full size
By now you should all know how much I adore the Rubybox Tools range – I think it’s so cool that we all get to try the tools out for free with our boxes and thus build a collection of really lovely beauty helpers. I have always said that using good-quality brushes can make a world of difference when applying make-up, and the Rubies are helping us tremendously in this regard! This is a beautiful, elegant little concealer brush, and now I simply MUST go out and buy a great quality concealer to use this with. 😀
TLC Acne Wash Cleansing Facial Wipes full size
And this big packet is what made my box so invitingly heavy this month! While I prefer using soap and water on my face because it makes me feel clean, I will try these on those stubborn blackhead-prone areas afterwards, since they claim to contain ingredients that actively fight those little suckers. Is this the miracle cure? I’ll keep you all in the loop. 😛
Deep Heat Bath Tonic sample
This is for aching and tired muscles, sooooo…I guess this might be the kick in the pants that I need to start with my exercise routine again after taking WAAAAY too long off of it after my operation. I have to have sore muscles to test this properly, right? Right.
I am a VERY happy customer this month, and I really do love my Rubybox! Now to see what September has in store for me…hopefully there’ll be a perfume sample in that one, as I do so enjoy my little perfume samples. ^_^

As a make-up artist, and a generally germ-phobic person, hand sanitizer is quite high up on my list of priorities. I like a little handbag-sized one so that I am never without the means to achieve squeaky clean and germ-free hands. 🙂 Of course, my pinky Dettol hand sanitizer ran out, and I was so happy with it that I wanted to buy another just like it but…no luck! I had to take a risk and buy an Oh So Heavenly one instead.
It had a picture of a lemon slice…I am a sucker for anything lemon-y, so this is the one that came home with me. I am actually very impressed, and will buy Oh So Heavenly again without hesitation. This smells very lemon fresh and clean, which I love, and is more liquid than gel so it doesn’t leave my hands sticky like other hand sanitizers have in the past. The bottle is also small enough to live in my handbag, with a sturdy lid that doesn’t seem likely to pop open at inopportune times (yes, this has also happened to me before…that was a VERY clean handbag…and cellphone…and everything else).
This is definitely a can’t-live-without product during the winter flu season, so I can happily recommend Oh So Heavenly and leave you all with super clean hands. 😉

During my monthly visit to Clicks, I noticed that there were a bunch of Accessorize products on the sale table, and the Accessorize stand was empty. Now while I hope that means that the new and exciting brand at Clicks will be Bourjois, it also means that I got to pick up this gorgeous little pressed powder for a fraction of the usual price – yay!
And as if the outer packaging wasn’t cute enough…
Check out the inside. 😀
I don’t use a powder puff to apply my powder anymore, though, as I have grown to prefer the more natural look that a brush gives. I have been using this powder to touch up shiny bits and make my make-up look fresh and new again, and I am very happy with it! It’s silky smooth, truly translucent and looks lovely and natural on my skin. And the compact is just sooooo gorgeous. 🙂
I also happened to notice some Accessorize lipsticks with similar packaging, so if you want to get your hands on some “just for the packaging” pretties (because I have no idea about the quality of the product but who cares, sometimes pretty is all you need), get to Clicks asap!
